Observations of large-scale coherent structures in gravity currents: implications for flow dynamics

چکیده

Abstract Density driven flows, also known as gravity currents, comprise a head, body, and tail. Yet whilst the body typically forms largest part of such its structure remains poorly understood. In this work, experimental data gathered using particle image velocimetry enables instantaneous, whole-field dynamics constant-influx solute-based currents to be resolved. While averaged turbulent kinetic energy profiles are comparable previous instantaneous sets reveal significant temporal variation, with velocity measurements indicating large-scale wave-like motions within body. Spectral analysis dynamic mode decomposition, streamwise vertical velocity, used identify frequencies structures dominant flow. By considering an idealised theoretical density profile, it is suggested that these may internal waves form critical layer flow located at height maximum velocity. Irreversible wave breaking has been postulated occur suggests formation eddy transport barriers, demonstrating new models mixing in needed. Graphic abstract

Large-scale secondary structures in duct flow

The spatial growth of small perturbations developing on a fully developed base flow in a duct with two inhomogeneous cross-flow directions is examined. For a laminar mean flow it is shown that optimally configured vortices at an upstream cross-section induce large transient amplification of a disturbance energy norm downstream. Such a linear growth is a likely initial stage of transition in duc...

A low-dimensional model predicting geometry-dependent dynamics of large-scale coherent structures in turbulence

We test the ability of a general low-dimensional model for turbulence to predict geometrydependent dynamics of large-scale coherent structures, such as convection rolls. The model consists of stochastic ordinary differential equations, which are derived as a function of boundary geometry from the Navier-Stokes equations [1, 2]. We test the model using Rayleigh-Bénard convection experiments in a...

Effect of large-scale coherent structures on turbulent convection.

We study an effect of large-scale coherent structures on global properties of turbulent convection in laboratory experiments in air flow in a rectangular chamber with aspect ratios A approximately 2 and A approximately 4 (with the Rayleigh numbers varying in the range from 5x10;{6} to 10;{8} ). The large-scale coherent structures comprise the one-cell and two-cell flow patterns. We found that a...

Evaluation of Close-Range Photogrammetric Technique for Deformation Monitoring of Large-Scale Structures: A review

Close-range photogrammetry has been used in many applications in recent decades in various fields such as industry, cultural heritage, medicine and civil engineering. As an important tool for displacement measurement and deformation monitoring, close-range photogrammetry has generally been employed in industrial plants, quality control and accidents. Although close-range photogrammetric applica...
